Robben Island
Just a short boat trip across Table Bay from the Victoria & Albert waterfront is the remote outpost which was a prison for political prisoners during the apartheid years. Its most famous inmate was Nelson Mandela who now thought of as one of South Africa's greatest statesmen. tours last about Three and a half hours including the boat journey across Table Bay.
Table Mountain
A trip to the top of Table Mountain on the aerial cableway is not to be missed by visitors to Cape Town. It reveals some magnificent views from the 360 degree rotating cars. Look out across Table Bay and down on Cape Town city from the summit and imagine the days of discovery when the sailing ships docked bearing spices and goods destined for European countries. Be sure to have your camera with you to record the magnificent Cape Town views. Get there early and take breakfast in the restaurant. Make sure you check that the cable cars are running before you start your trip as winds and weather conditions do force temporary closures
Victoria & Alfred Waterfront
( V&A waterfront )
Just a few minutes from Cape Town city centre is the one time dock area now transformed into the Victoria & Alfred waterfront with bars, restaurants, shopping malls, boutiques, cinemas, hotels. Arts and crafts workshops selling local made and South African work. Spend an hour or two and in the market and meet local entrepreneurs displaying and selling unique and sometimes unusual items.
Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
World famous Kirstenbosch Gardens are located at the foot of Table Mountain. Get here early and avoid the later rush of visitors. Have a full breakfast in the tea room before starting on a leisurely walk around the 560 ha site. If you don't make it for breakfast then order a picnic basket and find a quiet spot in the gardens. Over 6000 species of tress and plants and hundreds of bird species in natural surrounds will keep your interest for the duration of your visit. During summer months there are outdoor concerts by local and international artists which are normally very well attended.
Mount Nelson Hotel
Afternoon tea at the Mount Nelson hotel in Cape Town city is served in the central lounge and terrace overlooking the sprawling gardens. One of the most famous city landmarks built in 1899 just oozes history. Close enough to Cape Town's finest museums, art galleries and historic monuments as well as the trendy Kloof and Long streets gives the opportunity to see the city sights then take tea at the hotel. Afternoon tea is served between 2.30 pm and 5.30 pm with a variety of cakes and delicacies available from the buffet.

Many of the vineyards in the Cape also produce fine cheese which can be tasted along with the wine products. If you love cheese with your wine then it is worth planning your trip to include the cheese manufacturing vineyards. There are numerous touring companies offering tours which include cheese and wine. Try not to miss the Zevenwacht Estate though. Both wines and cheese on offer are excellent.
Love Wind Surfing
Best place for wind surfing or kite surfing is Blouberg beach. The wind seems always to be present and there is a good stretch of sandy beach to prepare equipment. Traveling from Cape Town city on the R27 take a left turn at Reitvlei nature reserve and you can't miss the most popular locations. It takes just minutes from the city to reach Blouberg and car Parking close to Blouberg beachfront is not normally a problem. There are of course many other spots around the peninsula if you are prepared to travel a little further. About 50 km from Cape Town city are the long beaches of Strand which are also popular with watersports enthusiasts.
Love Art & Craft Galleries
No shortage of galleries in and around Cape Town. Work by South African artists is on display and for sale in numerous galleries. Start with the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront Mall and then to the adjacent markets where it is usual for local artists to be present in person. The suburb of Woodstock is fast becoming an art and artists location near Cape Town. Combine antiques with art with a trip to Kalk Bay where the main road houses many shops selling direct to the public.
Love Theatre
Cape Town's Artscape theatre in the city centre presents both internationally known shows and artists including Ballet, Orchestras, Dance and stage shows. The Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch is part of the University of Cape Town and is much more of an intimate theatre for the performing arts. Classical music, comedy, jazz are all regularly featured. Parking is available nearby and in the Baxter Theatre car parking area. Other theatres include The Little Theatre, Maynardville Open Air Theatre, The New Space Theatre.

Cape Town has a dish for every palette with food from five star restaurants to simple take-aways. Throughout the city there are indoor or outdoor places to eat and you won't need to walk far before coming across somewhere suitable for your taste. Again the V & A waterfront area has a large selection of restaurants serving seafood and a wide array of dishes including the ever popular but very delicious fresh fish & chips. Eating out in Cape Town is a great favourite with residents. Visitors to Cape Town will not be disappointed with the range and quality of fine food and wine readily available throughout the city.

Cape Winelands
The winelands tours are a must for visitors to Cape Town. Take an organised tour if you intend wine tasting at the vineyards or designate a non drinking driver if you go by car. South Africa has strict drinking and driving laws. A good round day trip might include, Meerlust Estate, Waterford Estate, Thelema, and finally to Franschoek for a late lunch at Klein Genot restaurant / vineyard.
Cape Point Reserve
Travel from Cape Town to Cape Point nature reserve and see some of the Peninsula scenery on the way. Towards the reserve it is quite common to see baboons at the roadside and most definitely at the Cape Point reserve main parking area. Never feed or confront these baboons as they are wild and can be aggressive if threatened. Park in the main car park at the point and ride the funicular railway to see the view then drive the side tracks to view any birds or other wildlife that may be nearby.
Bettys Bay / Whale Watching
One of the most scenic drives in the Cape is out to Bettys Bay along the coastal route from Cape Town. Take the road through Chapmans Peak and around the Peninsula to - Boulders Penguin Colony - Simons Town - Fish Hoek - Muizenberg - Strand and on to Bettys Bay stopping off here and there on the way. Hermanus and Walker Bay are just a stone throw further on where each year between July and November giant southern right whales gather to mate and calve and can be viewed from some excellent spots along the coast. Allow a whole day for this trip.
